The Beginning of the Family Coffee Business
In 2004, my wife, Julia, and my son, Robbie, worked together at a local coffee shop in Culpeper, Virginia. She was a roaster. He was a barista. They fell in love with freshly-roasted coffee and she has been roasting ever since. Commonwealth Joe was founded by Robbie in 2012 to bring Julia’s coffee to the community, with a mission of making amazing coffee approachable.

Commonwealth Joe has grown a lot since then. They sell in Whole Foods Market stores across the DC Metro Area and have an award-winning cafe in Arlington, VA.

But their main business became providing cold brew coffee as a service to businesses to provide as a perk to their employees.

Coffee with a Cause
Prior to the COVID pandemic, they serviced nearly 300,000 office workers in the Mid-Atlantic, including the DC Metro, Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston. COVID-19 hit Commonwealth Joe hard since 90% of their business was B2B selling cold brew to offices.
With everyone working from home, they have shifted their focus during this period to sell freshly-roasted coffee directly to people at home. They launched a coffee subscription service in April, and it’s been a big hit. Their customers really enjoy buying directly from the roaster, which affords them the freshest coffee at an affordable price.

Despite the negative impacts COVID made on their business, Commonwealth Joe was also committed to supporting front-line workers. For every bag they sell on our website, they donate one cup of cold brew to front-line workers. Some of their customers have made direct donations too. They’ve been able to donate nearly 10,000 cups of cold brew over the past few months and look forward to donating many more.

When Julia and I visited family on Father’s Day (June 21), Robbie told me about his coffee subscription service and how popular that is becoming. After he offered a significant promotional discount to my subscribers, I volunteered to send an email to let people know.

Prayer Power
Most gracious and merciful heavenly Father, thank you for the precious gift of family. Thank you for the ways you have used coffee to draw our family closer together. Thank you for the success Commonwealth Joe has experienced and the many people it has blessed, at home, at work, and in the community. We pray for You to continue to direct the steps of Robbie and Commonwealth Joe and for Your hand of protection to be upon the company, its workers, and its customers. May Commonwealth Joe be a beacon of light, hope, and life to those it serves. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Thank you so much for your prayers and support.

Love and blessings from the Peck family!
